Who are we?
Situated in the heart of one of the northern suburbs of Sandton, Innesfree Farm. The farm used to be a cow kraal before the owner of the land donated the entire park to the city of Johannesburg. The piece of land that is now being utilized as farming land was destitute and overgrown until we started using it. The farming space sits on a chunk of 2.5 hectares , the land is utilized to grow organic produce (vegetables and herbs) , we also have a variety of fruits trees (70 fruit trees) that are still maturing.
Innesfree park has amazing fertile soil, it was previously used as a cow’s kraal and left untouched after that. The soil has proved ample times that it is fertile through the vast vegetation it has produced when it rains and when it has been prepared for produce. There is a healthy ecosystem that thrives within the soil, only just worms but a variety of other insects. We use permaculture principles at the farm meaning that we actively avoid over working the soil.
We believe that the soil should be left to be processed naturally by insects with a little encouragement from some natural mulch, that also helps protect the soil and produce and also helps with moisture retention and we ultimately do not waste water during production. We place emphasis on native, perennial plants, which are loved and adored by local insect populations, (which has been very beneficial to both parties us and the insects).
So not only are we providing an essential resource to the local insect population, we have vibrant, native plant flowers that come from local insects pollinating our plants. The farm is a water land in its own right. We have a wet land in the heart of the land, a river on the outer edges (near the farming land) and multiple clean water connections.
